Columbite is also called Niobite. It’s a high density, black orthorhombic mineral that is an ore of niobium

and tantalum. Columbite forms a series with the mineral tantalite. In fact, the two are always grouped together as a semi-singular mineral called columbite-tantalite or coltan in many mineral guides.

Niobium is used in alloys for improved strength. It is corrosion resistant and form dielectric oxide layers, it shows superconductivity properties and is being studied with other metals for a breakthrough alloy in this new industrial field. It is use in aircraft gas turbines, vacuum tubes and nuclear reactors.

Columbite and tantalite are mine in some state in the northern parts of Nigeria.
